SUEK speaks about smokeless fuel at the Siberian Energy Forum

21 November 2019
SUEK took part in the Siberian Energy Forum (SEF). The event was held in Krasnoyarsk for the tenth time. Today, SEF is a landmark forum for the region, as it promotes interaction between the energy sector, government, business and the public.

In three days, from November 20 to 22, SEF hosted 15 discussion platforms and round tables on the energy development strategy of the Siberian region, the state energy saving and energy efficiency policy and other topics.

On the first day of SEF, one of the key issues was the use of innovative technologies in the fuel and energy sector, which can improve the efficiency and sustainability of the industry. Particular attention was paid to innovations in the coal industry. At the round tables 'Clean energy development for Krasnoyarsk anniversary ' and 'Coal: mining, processing, smokeless fuel', forum participants discussed the prospects of using smokeless fuel briquettes for reducing air pollution from so-called autonomous heat sources, including private home stoves, mini-boiler houses and heating systems run by small companies.

Sergey Stepanov, Deputy Technical Director and Head of the Innovative Coal Processing Technologies Department at SUEK-Krasnoyarsk, spoke about the product. He pointed to the large-scale social and environmental project to assess the environmental characteristics of fuel briquettes burnt by private households, which took place in Krasnoyarsk in February-March this year. According to him, a facility for the deep processing of brown coal with an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes of finished products is ready for commissioning at the Berezovsky open-pit mine in the Sharypovsky district. Investment in its construction totalled around $16 million. A wide range of innovative products will be produced there, including smokeless briquettes, which have been highly praised by the expert community following the social and environmental experiment.

The Minister of Industry, Energy, Housing and Communal Services of the Krasnoyarsk region, Yevgeny Afanasyev, called deep coal processing an important step towards fulfilling the potential of the coal industry. 'In the coal region, the future of the coal industry is so clear. First of all, this, of course, is our generation, which is developing technologies to minimise the environmental impact on the territory. A large market for the introduction of new, high-tech projects is represented by local private households. Smokeless fuel is the very product that enables our people to achieve good environmental performance while using old equipment. Therefore, possibilities are always there. The key is to find them and correctly use them,' Yevgeny Afanasyev said.

Indeed, smokeless fuel is highly rated not only in the Krasnoyarsk region but also in other parts of Russia. This year, SUEK's innovative product received several national awards: the ECO BEST AWARD 2019 in the field of ecology and resource conservation in the 'Innovation of the year' category, in addition to the award of the competition for best practices in sustainable development of the territories 'Development of regions. Best for Russia' in the 'Product of the year' category ('Natural resources and ecology').
